AGI has always stressed the need for standards and inter-operability to be incorporated in the solutions being planned for implementation in the Government’s flagship programs. Over the last few months, AGI has also participated in multiple policy forums where this message has been delivered. Further, AGI contributed towards the in-depth discussions on proposed standards for their adoption by the geospatial community during the recently held OGC Planning Committee/Technical Committee Meeting and the 2013 OGC Asia Forum Summit in Mumbai in December 2013.

A significant accomplishment that will give impetus to this initiative is the landmark signing of an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between AGI and Open Geospatial Consortium. The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is an international industry consortium of 473 companies, government agencies and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available interface standards. OGC® Standards support interoperable solutions that “geo-enable” the Web, wireless and location-based services and mainstream IT. The standards empower technology developers to make complex spatial information and services accessible and useful with all kinds of applications.

This partnership will enable AGI to help industry and users in India to understand and adhere to global standards and practices, thereby bringing in standardization of the platforms as well as application and also enabling interoperability with non-spatial applications.
