Geospatial technologies have emerged globally as a useful tool to address spatial problems with significant societal implications that require innovative approaches for analysis, modelling, managing, and archiving of extensive and diverse data sets. Over the years, geospatial technologies has been making prodigious impact on its usage in varied fields related to sustainable development, disaster management, natural resource management, etc. and have become an integral part of various key programs of the Government of India. On the other hand disruptive technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT), smart phones, sensors, etc. are creating entirely new avenues for geospatial data collection. As a result, location-based analytics and platforms that can process and detect trends and provide intelligence are becoming more popular.

The eight states of North Eastern Region (NER) of India are blessed with scenic natural beauty, rich biodiversity, and rare wild life. However, due to its distinctive topographic and physiographic conditions, it has been a challenging region for developmental activities. Geospatial technologies can provide valuable contribution for accelerating the overall growth of the region and its people.

With this background Association of Geospatial Industries (AGI) and North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong are organizing a 2-day national-level conference on “Role of Geospatial Technology in the Development of North East Region of India” in the city of Shillong (Meghalaya) on 27-28 November, 2019.

Addressing the various challenges of the geospatial ecosystem in the region, the conference will focus on latest advancements made in geospatial technologies and its applications in various key areas such as infrastructure, defense, water and sanitation, etc. As an industry-led association AGI will stimulate exchange of ideas, techniques, approaches, and experiences by those who design, implement, and use geospatial solutions and services. The outcome of the conference is expected to bring out valuable insights and recommendations that will help in furthering the developmental planning of the entire North Eastern Region.
